A narrative of the building and a description of the construction of the Edystone Lighthouse with stone
to which is subjoined, an appendix, giving some account of the lighthouse on the Spurn Point, built upon a sand by John Smeaton.

  • エディストン灯台(Eddystone lighthouse)はイギリス海峡の西端プリマスの南沖合14マイルにある、航海の難所として知られる岩島(Eddystone Rocks)1696年に建てられました。 Henry Winstanley(1644-1703)による初代灯台及びそれを大幅に改修した2代目の灯台は、1703年に激しい暴風雨にのまれ崩壊してしまいます。代わってジョン・ラドヤード(John Rudyard)によって再建された灯台は1709年に完成し、1655年までの46年間存続します。本書は最初の灯台建設の試みから、1759年に完成した4代目灯台にいたる過程について、建設に従事した18世紀イギリスの土木技術者ジョン・スミートン(John Smeaton, 1724-1792)によって詳述された報告書です。

    巻末には【エディストン灯台周辺の海図】をはじめ、灯台の正面図、断面図等を精密に描いた図版を収録しています。
