The Palace of Versailles and the two Trianon palaces Versailles et les deux Trianons

Grill-work

To the cover of The Palace of Versailles and the two Trianon palaces
Title Page
  • The history of the Palace of Versailles begins with the establishment in 1626 by Louis XIII of a small castle for use as a hunting lodge in Versailles 18 km south-west of Paris. After Louis XIII's death, relocated of the capital was advocated by Louis XIV and work began on the construction of the large Versailles Palace in 1661 according to the design of architect Louis Le Vau (1612-1670) and others. Beginning in 1668 J. Hardouin-Mansart (1646-1708) rebuilt and enlarged the central section, to which he subsequently added the left and right wings connected to the central section, and the outline of the modern palace was complete by 1688.

This work by Philippe Gille (1831-1901) provides a detailed description of the composition and architectural styles of the buildings, interior decoration, and furniture and fittings of Europe's premier palace, the Palace of Versailles, and of the two small palaces, the Grand and Petit Trianon palaces, situated in its vast park. It is accompanied by separate illustrations including hand-colored illustrations by Marcel Lambert and many in-text illustrations.
